Breed Overview

The Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervuren is the long-coated fawn and mahogany variety of the four Belgian Shepherd types, registered by the Kennel Club in the Working Group. It takes its name from the village of Tervuren near Brussels where the variety was developed in the late nineteenth century. Visually it is perhaps the most striking of the four varieties: a long, flowing double coat in rich mahogany to fawn with black overlay and black mask, combined with the athletic, elegant build of a genuine working herding dog.

The Tervuren shares the core characteristics common to all Belgian Shepherd varieties - high intelligence, intense handler loyalty, strong working drive and powerful herding instincts - but is considered by many breed enthusiasts to be slightly more approachable than the Malinois while retaining the same fundamental working capability. This is a meaningful distinction in terms of day-to-day management but should not be misread as making the Tervuren a suitable choice for inexperienced owners.

In character, the Tervuren is deeply loyal to its family and typically forms particularly close bonds with its primary handler. It is not a breed that distributes affection widely. With its own people it is warm, engaged and demonstratively devoted. With strangers it maintains a natural reserve that requires thorough early socialisation to keep within appropriate limits.

Exercise requirements are the same as all Belgian Shepherd varieties: a minimum of two hours of vigorous daily activity, with mental engagement alongside physical output. Herding, agility, obedience, tracking and protection sports all suit the Tervuren's combination of athleticism, intelligence and drive.

The herding instincts are strong and active. Circling running children, chasing moving objects and nipping are natural expressions of herding behaviour rather than aggression, but they require an owner who understands the distinction and knows how to channel these instincts productively.

Grooming the long double coat is a genuine commitment. Three to four brushing sessions per week are necessary to prevent tangles and manage shedding. Seasonal moults produce significant additional shedding. Professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks maintains coat condition.

Hip and elbow scoring of both parents is the primary health recommendation. Progressive Retinal Atrophy is documented in Belgian Shepherd lines and DNA testing is available. Epilepsy has been reported in some lines. Lifespan is typically 12 to 14 years. Insurance of £35 to £70 per month.

Purchase prices from KC-registered breeders range from £800 to £1,500. Monthly running costs average £150 to £250.

The Tervuren is a breed of exceptional beauty and outstanding working capability that requires an owner willing to invest fully in its exercise, training and socialisation needs. The Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Great Britain is the primary contact for breed information, responsible breeders and rescue enquiries.
