Breed Overview
The Smooth Fox Terrier is one of the oldest and most distinctly British terrier breeds, a bold, lively and elegant small terrier developed in England from at least the eighteenth century for the specific purpose of working with foxhounds to bolt foxes from their earths during foxhunts. The breed's combination of courage, agility, determination and the ability to go to ground while remaining compact enough to follow a fox underground made it an essential working companion in the English hunting field for generations. Registered by the Kennel Club in the Terrier Group, it is one of the classic British terrier types and the foundation from which numerous other terrier breeds were subsequently developed.
The breed's appearance is the epitome of terrier elegance: a balanced, well-made small dog with a predominantly white coat with tan, black and tan or black markings, a flat, narrow skull, small, folded V-shaped ears, and the general impression of a compact, athletic dog with energy and confidence evident in every line. The smooth coat lies flat and close to the skin, giving the dog a clean, defined outline. Adults typically stand about 38 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh approximately 7 to 8 kilograms.
The character is quintessentially terrier. The Smooth Fox Terrier is bold, alert, lively and independent, with the fearless confidence that characterises a dog bred to work underground alongside a much larger quarry animal. It is entertaining, animated and characterful company for owners who appreciate a dog with genuine personality and opinions. It is loyal to its own family, though it may be initially reserved or boisterous with strangers. With older children who understand how to interact with a terrier it can be excellent; it is less suited to very young children or to those unfamiliar with the robust, self-assured terrier personality.
The prey drive is strong and genuine. The Smooth Fox Terrier should be considered incompatible with pet rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and similar small animals. Recall around prey animals cannot be relied upon in open areas. A securely fenced garden is essential - the breed is athletic, determined and capable of finding escape routes that less motivated breeds would not exploit.
Relations with other dogs can be variable. Well-socialised individuals may be fine with dogs they know, but the terrier tendency toward confrontation with unfamiliar dogs requires management.
Primary Lens Luxation is an important health concern in the terrier group and DNA testing of parents before breeding is important. The breed is generally hardy and long-lived.
Purchase prices from KC-registered breeders range from £700 to £1,200. Monthly running costs average £80 to £140. The Fox Terrier Club and the Smooth Fox Terrier Association are the primary resources for breed information, responsible breeders and rescue contact.
Temperament & Personality
Bold, lively, alert and independent - the Smooth Fox Terrier is classic British terrier in every respect. Entertaining and characterful. Loyal to its own family. Can be combative with other dogs. Strong prey drive toward small animals. Fearless and tenacious. Good with older children who respect its character. Not a gentle or passive breed.
Training
Smooth Fox Terriers are intelligent but have strong terrier independence. They respond to positive reinforcement and can be trained to a good standard, but they will always have terrier priorities. Recall around prey is unreliable and management is more effective than training alone in this regard. Early socialisation is important. Short, engaging training sessions work best.
Exercise Needs
Smooth Fox Terriers need 1-1.5 hours of daily exercise. They are active, athletic and love to run, explore and investigate. A secure garden is essential - they are capable diggers and can squeeze through small gaps. Recall around prey animals is unreliable. Short on-lead walks do not satisfy this breed.
Health & Vet Costs
The Smooth Fox Terrier is generally a healthy and hardy breed. Hereditary conditions are relatively uncommon. Primary Lens Luxation is a significant eye condition documented in the terrier group including fox terriers - DNA testing of parents is important. Deafness linked to white coat can occur. Hip evaluation is advisable. Lifespan 12-15 years.
Protect your Fox Terrier (Smooth) with the right insurance
Vet costs are rising. Lifetime cover means long-term conditions stay covered for life -- not just 12 months.
Feeding & Nutrition
High-quality small to medium breed complete food. Adults typically need 150-250g dry food daily across two meals. Monitor body condition - active terrier type that maintains weight well with sufficient exercise. Fresh water always available.

Grooming & Care
The short, dense, smooth coat is very low-maintenance. Weekly brushing with a soft brush or hound glove keeps it gleaming. Occasional bathing as needed. Ears need regular checking. Nails require regular trimming. Dental care important. Very low grooming commitment.
Costs of Ownership
Smooth Fox Terrier puppies from KC-registered breeders typically cost £700-£1,200. Annual ongoing costs including food, insurance and routine care average £1,000-£1,600.
